| The marathon started at Recreio beach in the upper right corner and followed a series of beaches around to the left, passing along Ipanema and Copacabana before finishing near the Flamengo beach across from Sugar Loaf. The course was mostly flat. Being non-American, the course was measured as 42.2 kilometers instead of the usual 26.2 miles. |
